How Long Should Your Golf Driver Be?

There is no club in the bag more important than a driver. You need to be consistent off the tee and having the right driver is key to this, which means that it is important that you know how to choose a driver that is the right length. So, how can you go about doing this? Read on for all that you need to know.

Standard Length

The standard length for men’s drivers is 45 inches while for women it is 44 inches. These are good starting points and are suitable for most, but those that are a lot taller/shorter than average may find this to be the wrong length. Additionally, some people may find that the standard length does not feel right and is too long – comfort is everything when it comes to choosing a driver.

Distance vs Accuracy

The length of the driver will also impact how far you are able to drive the ball. The longer the driver, the further you should drive, but this will make it harder to hit consistently. This is why it is important to find a club that is long but you still have control over. Research shows that a 43-inch driver should travel around 250 yards while a 44-inch driver will result in around 270 yards. These are not small distances and having the right length could give you a significant competitive advantage.

Limits

You should know that there are also limits for driver length. Under the Rules of Golf, the maximum length of a club is 48 inches while the minimum is 18 inches. Companies do make drivers in excess of 48 inches for recreational players and to attract new players, but keep in mind that these cannot be used in official tournaments. There is even one company that offers a 6 foot (72-inch) driver!

Choosing a Driver

So, how should you choose a driver? Length is not the only important factor as you must also think about the loft, size of the clubhead and material. When choosing a golf driver, you should always buy from a specialist supplier and speak to someone if you are unsure of what the best club is for you. It is also helpful if you know what your swing speed is, especially when it comes to choosing the loft.

Every golfer needs to have the right driver in their bag and this can make an enormous difference to your game. Everyone is different, though, so you need to know how to pick the right club and the length is one of the most important factors to consider. It is about finding the right balance of power and accuracy so that you can drive long distances consistently and get each hole off to a great start.
